While the United States Federal Government claims that ‘Promoting freedom and democracy and protecting human rights around the world are central to US foreign policy,’ polls reveal that at home three-quarters of its citizens say they distrust it and a majority believe the Feds pose a threat to their freedoms. A recent news story demonstrates that such concerns and lack of trust in Washington, DC is well-founded. Patrik Jonsson writes for the Christian Science Monitor about how the Federal Government is using its power to suppress free speech on college campuses: The failure of the University of Montana to respond adequately to rape and sexual assault allegations against popular football players has led to a broadening of how the federal government defines sexual harassment, causing free speech advocates to worry that the new policy will be used to punish “unwelcome” flirting and chill the right to speak freely on campus. A detailed “resolution agreement” with the University of Montana, dated May 9, outlines what the US Department of Education and Justice Department describe as a new “blueprint” for how colleges should view sex discrimination, assault, and harassment on campuses. The new policy is seen as binding, because colleges can lose federal funding, including [...]

Ron Maxwell’s new film ‘Copperhead‘ comes out this summer. In stark contrast to the anti-Southern films of late which have glorified Abraham Lincoln and the US conquest of the South while demonising Southerners, this new film is described as ‘A timeless, deeply moving examination of the price of dissent.’ Bill Kauffman, the author of Bye Bye Miss American Empire: Neighborhood Patriots, Backcountry Rebels, and their Underdog Crusades to Redraw America’s Political Map recently appeared on Scott Horton’s program Antiwar Radio to discuss the film and the ideas behind it: Novelist Bill Kauffman discusses the new film Copperhead, about the Civil War opposition in upstate New York; the small “r” front-porch brand of republicanism; our lost tradition of Christian pacifism; and how you can help get Copperhead playing in a theater near you.
Residents of Memphis continue to wait for the final vote by the city council on the permanent names of the city’s three Confederate-themed parks formerly (and, to many still) known as Nathan Bedford Forrest Park, Jefferson Davis Park, and Confederate Park. Late last month, the special committee appointed by the city council to review the matter made their recommendations, and Mayor A C Wharton chimed in with a recommendation of his own, as reported by Toby Sells of the Commercial Appeal. The committee of white and black historians and interested citizens recommended Nathan Bedford Forrest Park be named Civil War Memorial Park with the statue of Forrest and his and his wife’s graves remaining; Confederate Park be named Promenade Park; and Jefferson Davis Park would be Harbor Park. The City Council had temporarily changed the names of Forrest Park to Health Sciences Park, Confederate Park to Memphis Park and Jefferson Davis Park to Mississippi River Park. The committee was formed after the council voted in February to rename the parks. The council will vote on the new names but the vote’s date has not been set. A move to restore the names honoring the Confederacy and its leaders failed in Monday’s meeting [...]

In yet another case of Yankee arrogance, we have Mr. John Flannery, a lawyer from the Bronx, NY who wishes to have a statue removed from the front of a courthouse in Leesburg, VA. The statue was erected in 1908 to honour the Confederate soldiers who valiantly defended Loudoun County from Lincoln and his Yankee hordes. A statue of a Confederate soldier that has stood in front of the historic courthouse in Loudoun County since 1908 is now being called inappropriate and a local lawyer says it should be removed. The statue was erected to honor the war dead at a time when many Civil war veterans were still alive. The statue shows a Confederate soldier standing guard with his rifle ready. An inscription, carved into the stone monument, says, “In memory of the Confederate Soldiers of Loudoun County, Va. Erected May 28, 1908.” But Loudoun County, deeply divided over the war in 1861, may not have healed old wounds. Attorney John Flannery, who often has cases in the courthouse, wants the statue moved elsewhere. He says it’s intimidating to some of his clients. “It deters people. It chills them from believing they can get a fair shake in court,” [...]

General Philip Breedlove of Forrest Park, Georgia, recent commander of the United States Air Forces in Europe, is the new military head of NATO. He replaces James Stavridis, who was born in Florida to ethnic Greek immigrants from Turkey. John Vadiver writes for Stars and Stripes. “Within the borders of our Alliance we enjoy unprecedented levels of stability, but beyond our frontiers there is uncertainty and insecurity,” Breedlove said during a speech at his new headquarters in Mons, Belgium, according to excerpts made available by public affairs officials. “As SACEUR my first and enduring priority will be to ensure that NATO remains vigilant and prepared to meet the challenges and threats of the future with agile, capable, and interoperable military forces.” At the top of Breedlove’s agenda will be managing NATO’s transition from a combat mission in Afghanistan to a supporting role focused on training Afghan forces. Alliance officials say Afghan troops are already in the lead in most of the country, where, despite a massive 12-year effort by NATO, Taliban insurgents remain firmly entrenched. …In a final posting on his blog, “From the Bridge,” Stavridis also advised his replacement to be prepared for possible action on Syria. “Keep a [...]

As noted in SNN’s study of the Golden Circle region and its origins, the South and the other classically-influenced cultures of the New World were heavily influenced by Renaissance thought and taken together formed a unique civilization of plantation societies that shared a common origin and many of the same struggles. In addition to their different socio-economic basis (which distinguished them from New England, the Mid-West and the Mid-Atlantic States region) they also experienced cycles of prosperity and destruction as well as demographic revolution; both were frequently (though not always) imposed upon societies in the region by outside forces. New England historian Dr Bernard Bailyn has written much on the subject of what he calls ‘Atlantic civilisation.’ On page 19 of his book Atlantic History: Concept and Contours Bailyn quotes Belgian historian Charles Verlinden (whom Bailyn credits with ‘the first formulation’ of Atlantic history) from his 1966 work ‘Les Origines coloniales de la civilisation atlantique’: [I]t is certain that an Atlantic civilization exists today and that the nations of western Europe as well as of the two Americas and South Africa are daily becoming more completely integrated within it. A civilization nourished and based on ideas, institutions, and forms of organization and works of common origins has developed [...]

As SNN continues to document the failure and decline of the ‘New South’ (imposed upon Southerners by the US Federal Government) we note the recent front page of the The Augusta Chronicle, the major newspaper in Georgia’s second largest city, Augusta. It follows up on a story we covered recently of the savage beating of a young couple on the Augusta Riverwalk by a pair of pipe-wielding thugs who had previously mugged people in the local area. Since the United States Federal Government imposed democracy, equality and policies which have stripped the local community of its autonomy, the once-safe and very Southern city has been transformed into a violent, deteriorating ghetto. Much (though certainly not all) of its Southern charm and hospitality is gone and the downtown area as well as much of the south Augusta area is no longer safe, especially after dark. White flight from this city (which now has a consolidated county-city government) which in 2010 was 55% Black has resulted in the rapid growth of nearby Martinez, Georgia (which in 2000 was 83% White) and other largely White suburbs. Two mostly White towns (Hephzibah and Blythe) in the southern part of Richmond County voted not to consolidate with [...]

On his popular talk radio program today Rush Limbaugh told his audience that ‘there is more going on than just Benghazi.’ He then proceeded to defend at length the Republican media’s focus on the subject, admitting that it was to a large degree motivated by politics and then saying ‘we will stick with it.’ Limbaugh is correct on that. In fact, Fox News is running the headline now ‘New Details Challenge Administration Claims on Disputed Benghazi Memos.’ Below their headline are various Benghazi-related stories. If we scroll down on the Fox News homepage we see that one of the highlighted videos is of television personality Bill O’Reilly asking ‘Does Benghazi really matter?’ There are various other stories on the page about whether or not Miley Cyrus is really the ‘world’s hottest’ woman and about John Lennon’s Ferrari being auctioned. There’s plenty of room for entertainment gossip along with the wall-to-wall coverage of Benghazi. However, there’s not a single mention on the Fox News homepage of anything related to fierce immigration debate taking place right over efforts by Democrats and Republican elites to grant amnesty to 11 million illegal immigrants. Nothing. It’s apparently a subject on which the people who run Fox would [...]
