the Canadian flag was the Red Ensign with the Union Jack. It was felt that the Maple Leaf design was more inclusive to French Canadians.

Years ago there was controversy involving the Red Ensign flying over Juno Beach, even though it had been Canada’s flag at the time, perhaps similar to Confederate flags flying in Southern States.
