Gen Dempsey against joining Israeli attack on Iran

August 31, 2012
By

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, has come out publicly against US participation in an Israeli attack on Iran. RT America has the story:

The highest ranking officer in the United States military has announced that he is against American participation in any Israeli-led attack on Iran, even as pressure to destroy the Islamic Republic’s rumored nuclear program remain unrelieved.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters in London on Thursday that an Israeli attack would “clearly delay but probably not destroy Iran’s nuclear program,” adding that he was against US cooperation in a unilateral assault.

“I don’t want to be complicit if they [Israel] choose to do it,” Dempsey told reporters.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been adamant that the nation’s nuclear facilities exist solely for peaceful purposes and that the country is not in the market for procuring nuclear warheads, a sentiment echoed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who earlier this week told heads of state, “Our motto is nuclear energy for all and nuclear weapons for none.”

General Dempsey is certainly to be commended for resisting the demands for war by super-hawks such as John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Joe Lieberman and the Neo-conservatives in the US media. It’s refreshing to see a little sanity in high offices and someone actually putting our interests ahead of the blood-lusting of the Likudniks and the Neo-cons.

One Response to Gen Dempsey against joining Israeli attack on Iran

“The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, has come out publicly against US participation in an Israeli attack on Iran”.

Of course he would. It is not in the best interest of the military to support action of this kind. Especially if he wants some political consideration after he retires. But then again he could change his mind should political expediency trump military considerations. The JCS is not without it’s own internal politics. Political foreign policy trumps military posturing every time. Jus thinkin.
