Public disconnect on Declaration of Independence

Rasmussen has a couple of polls which demonstrate a total disconnect on the part of the public with regards to the Declaration of Independence. On one hand, the public (by much higher percentages than in years gone by) believes that the legitimacy of the government rests upon the consent of the governed. On the other hand, the public does not believe the US government has the consent of the governed.

‎’The Declaration of Independence, ratified by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, asserts that “governments derive their only just powers from the consent of the governed.” A new Rasmussen Reports national survey finds that 70% of American Adults agree with that statement….

…[A] related poll in late June found that just 22 percent of Americans believe their government has the consent of the governed.’

What did Thomas Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers recommend when faced with such a government as Washington, DC which has abused the people and no longer enjoys their consent? Let’s look at the words of the Declaration itself:

[I]t is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Let us not forget that the Fourth of July, Independence Day, is a celebration of an act of secession. Our ancestors seceded from a government which was much smaller, less intrusive and far more benign than the US Federal Government.

    People suffer from this delusion that voting in Federal elections will change things. The “throw the bums out” philosophy keeps them going. They dont see that the system is the problem, not the folks at the helm. If their candidate doesnt get elected or he wins and then doesnt do what he says he was going to do after he gets elected(big surprise there) the voters always look to the next election, 4 years down the road. I’ve already seen folks talking about Rand Paul in 2016. These same people will then talk about 2020 then 2024, and on and on. To me it would make more sense to focus on local and state elections, get Southern Nationalists in power so we can abolish our ties to the Feds and alter the local governments. (which I think will be easier since after secession the Yankees who have moved here will high-tail it out of Dixie). Looking to the future is one thing, but ignoring the realities of the present wont accomplish anything. The big reality is that DC can not be and will not allow reform; secession is the only answer.

    Masked Walnut,

    I agree with you 100%. Right after the SCOTUS ruling on Obamacare last week, a conservative told me the solution to the problem is to throw everyone out of office. I tried to convince him that “the system” can’t be reformed. When he asked me what is my solution I told him that in my opinion, a good divorce is better than a bad marriage and we are in a bad marriage. He appeared to be somewhat receptive to my idea of divorce.

    Thats is good to hear AF. Hopefully more and more folks will realize the Federal government can not be reformed and that the only answer is to divorce from them. We just need to continuing spreading these ideas.
