One of the symbols of the South is the Brown Thrasher, a feisty, territorial bird. The Brown Thrasher is the official State bird of Georgia, and was the inspiration for the name of Atlanta’s former National Hockey League team, the Atlanta Thrashers. The Brown Thrasher was also the inspiration for a Southern video series we are introducing. These videos will be more cultural than political and will deal with many of the issues facing Southerners today. The series will also be a bit more informal than some of our other videos. In an effort to generate cross-over appeal and given the unique nature of the video series we have decided to make a Brown Thrashers website and YouTube channel. Don’t worry – everything posted there will also be posted here on SNN so you won’t miss anything. Our first video (as well as the unedited and slightly longer audio) is below. If y’all like the material please pass it around. It won’t appeal to everyone but could be a good way to introduce some folks to our ideas.

Symbol of Defiance to the yankee empire maybe?
Yes, I think it makes a good symbol especially of cultural defiance.
This is a really great idea – love it!!! I actually found the audio more interesting than the video – like it would be great on radio! For future videos, I would think about not showing people talking so much, but other images/video – more than what you have included in this video. It’s great to see y’all laughing and being engaged and all, though, and people do like to attach faces to voices. I like the relaxed atmosphere too. Anyway, that’s just my opinion on it. Wonderful to see great things continue to come from SNN!!
Ginny, I’m happy that you like it. It was a lot of fun to record. I’ve already made the second video (and have posted the audio on TBT site – I’ll post the video either later tonight or tomorrow). I’ve added more images on the new video but probably not as many as I could add. I’ll try to add even more in upcoming TBT videos. Thanks for the feedback.
If a simple bird has the sense to fight for their territory why don’t we? When we read scripture we are taught in several places to lean lessons from nature. Much we can learn from this little bird.
