A few of my Facebook friends understand what most people in many of the Southern movements have long forgotten. I hear them say, “Our history is our heritage.” This is wrong. Our heritage “has” a history but it is not our history. Heritage is about who we are today as it relates to our ancestors. This is a point that the Sons of Confederate Veterans at the national level does not yet seem to comprehend. For the traditional Southerner, it is less our symbols that are hated by those who live the values of modernity; it is us that they hate on a personal level.
